Baseball Canada has announced the names of the 27 athletes that have been invited to the Junior National Team’s (U-18) Selection Camp set to take place at USA Baseball’s National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina from July 24 to July 30. “Rod Heisler saw his photo hanging inside the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and did a double-take.
“What’s that guy doing there?” Heisler remembers thinking.
It was induction day in St. Marys, and despite wearing the maple leaf in international competition more times than any other Canadian ballplayer, Heisler still could not believe he was about join former Blue Jays Russell Martin, Jimmy Key, and the rest of the class of 2024.

Known as Howie to his many diamond friends and associates, Birnie has spent innumerable hours over almost countless years serving cold drinks, doling out penny and nickel candy and making change in the small, red-brick snack bar sandwiched between the first base grandstand and the bottom of a high hill at Talbot Park, home of the Leaside Baseball Association (LBA) in east end Toronto.
He spent a similar amount of time dragging and watering the infield, pounding the sand around the mound and home plate, anchoring the bases and chalking the foul lines at the venerable sandlot often called “The Shrine” by some in the Toronto baseball community.”
