Hicks taken by Rangers in MLB draft

Toronto Mets alum and Arkansas State catcher Liam Hicks (Toronto, Ont.) was selected in the ninth round by the Texas Rangers in the MLB draft on Monday. He is the 45th player in Arkansas State program history to be drafted and the first since fellow Canadian Kyle McDonald (Missisauga, Ont.) was chosen by the New York Yankees in 2019.

Right-hander Alex MacKinnon (Aurora, Ont.) pitched five seasons for the Niagara University Purple Eagles and evolved into one of the best closers and leaders in the program’s history. The bright young Canuck is also a three-time member of the MAAC all-academic team who graduated with an MBA in sports marketing.
