Shushkewich: Saskatoon-born, Phillies draft Owusu-Asiedu begins pro career

Each year, thousands of players across the high school and college ranks hope to hear their name called during the MLB Draft, and Avery Owusu-Asiedu, who was born in Saskatoon, Sask., was no different. The outfielder from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville was a day two selection, drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the ninth round with the 283rd pick in the draft and later signed for a $150,000 USD bonus. Canadian Baseball Network writer Tyson Shushkewich recently spoke with Owusu-Asiedu who has started playing for the Phillies’ Rookie Ball affiliate in the Florida Complex League.

Gallagher: Norman second Black manager hired by IBL team in 60 years

When the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers of Ontario's Intercounty Baseball League appointed Dan Norman July 19 as their first manager for their expansion season of 2024, little did they know he was a rare hire.

Through research and conversations with league officials, Canadian Baseball Network writer Danny Gallagher determined that Norman is only the second Black person to be named a manager of any IBL team in 60 years.
