McFarland: Kooy looking forward to representing Saskatchewan at Canadian Futures Showcase

"The opportunities keep coming for Trentin Kooy and he’s more than happy to take them, no matter how far he has to go.

The Saskatoon native has quickly risen up the ranks of some of the best Canadian prospects set to graduate high school in 2026 thanks to some big performances on even bigger stages.

After appearances at the Prep Baseball Report Junior Future Games in 2023 and the 2024 Baseball Canada Cup with Team Saskatchewan, Kooy is looking forward to adding to that resume when he suits up for Team Black at the Canadian Futures Showcase at Rogers Centre in Toronto Sept. 17-21."

"The Cleveland Guardians have been one of the most active major league teams in dipping their toes into Canadian waters at the MLB draft.

They have four Canadians on their big league roster and five Canucks have played in their farm system this season, including right-hander Sean Heppner (Richmond, B.C.), whom they selected in the 12th round of the MLB draft in July.

“I wouldn’t describe it [the day he was drafted] as hectic, but it was definitely a rollercoaster of a day,” said Heppner, speaking to the Canadian Baseball Network. “You don’t know how things will shake up until the draft is in full swing and you start getting phone calls and teams gauging interest. Luckily, the Guardians took me in the 12th round, and the journey is just getting started.”

The best high school players in the area are eligible. In 2019 Jayden Daniels, the quarterback from Cajon High, was the football winner. The actual award is probably deep in Daniels’ closet by now, since he won the Heisman Trophy and made the grand post-season banquet tour after he finished at LSU last year. Now a rookie with the Washington Commanders, there’s a chance Daniels hasn’t quite grasped who Ken Hubbs was."
