Invites to pre-draft workouts: “I didn’t have any this year because I was pitching in the Draft League. But in 2025 I had five private workouts: Mets, Padres, Angels, Tigers and another team.”

Good genes: “My father, Jerry, played when he was young and my mom, Lori Russell, played soccer and basketball in high school.”

The most influential people in my baseball life: “My parents drove me to and from practice and games. They always supported me chasing my goal.”

Keegan O’Hearn at his first Michigan game with his father Jerry, who saw his son play one game before passing.

The most influential person in my baseball career, besides my family: “Rick Johnston. He was my coach since I started taking baseball seriously when I was 14 and a little guy. Rick drove me to practice, drove me to workouts and drove my late father to Ann Arbour, Mich, to see my first game with the Wolverines. Rick threw me hours of batting practice and watched all of my bullpens and made suggestions as I tried to decide whether I was a pitcher or a position player. He was someone to lean on when I had my surgery.”

Best day on the ball field: “We were facing Oregon, a strong team. They brought me in during a one-run game when Oregon had runners on first and third with none out to face their 4-5-6 hitters. I got a ground out without the guy scoring, a strikeout and a ground ball to get out of the inning without giving up a run. And we won by one run.”

Favourite player when you discovered baseball: “Jose Bautista because he wore No. 19. It was basically because of No. 19. That was my favorite number from hockey. That was Joe Thornton’s number.”

Favourite player today: “Mason Miller because he’s a really good reliever.”
