Premier 12: Canada eliminated after loss to Mexico

TAICHUNG, Taiwan- Canada’s run at the WBSC Premier 12 is over after a 4-3 quarterfinal loss to Mexico.
Mexico scored four unearned runs and held Canada off the scoreboard in all but one inning to advance to the semi-final round in Tokyo, Japan.
“This team wins with pitching a defense and today our defense didn’t play well, it’s as simple as that,” said Canada Manager Ernie Whitt. “It’s a tough way to lose because they (Mexico) didn’t beat us, we beat ourselves, but that’s baseball. I’m very proud of all my players.”
The loss overshadowed a tremendous start on the mound for Scott Diamond (Guelph, Ont.) who went seven strong innings and was perfect after a lead off single in the third.
With Canada leading 3-1, Diamond was replaced by Phillippe Aumont (Gatineau, Que.) who got into trouble early after hitting the lead off batter before an infield single put runners on first and second. Mexico looked to move the runners over on a bunt and Canada responded nabbing the lead runner at third, but a throwing error from Pete Orr (Newmarket, Ont.) put runners on a second and third with just one out.
After another infield single, a base hit to left brought Mexico to within one before an error by shortstop Sean Jamieson (Kitchener, Ont.) with two out allowed two more runs to score that gave Mexico a one run lead.
Things had gotten off to a shaky start for Canada in the top of the first as Mexico’s lead off hitter got aboard on an error before back-to-back one out singles pushed a run across. Diamond managed to shut them down after that tossing perfect frames from the fourth to seventh. He finished his outing with two strikeouts.
Canada had little answer for Mexico starter Miguel Peña until the sixth when Rene Tosoni (Port Coquitlam, BC) singled up the middle with two out to score Tyler O’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC) from second base and Brock Kjeldgaard (London, Ont.) followed with a double to left that brought in Jordan Lennerton (Langley, BC) and Tosoni.
Mexico now advances to the semi final round that will take place in Tokyo, Japan. They will take on the United States on Nov.19th with the winner advancing to Saturday’s gold medal game.

The next event for the Senior National Team program will be in March 2017 with the fourth edition of the World Baseball Classic.
