The NAIA World Series and Division I conference tournaments highlighted the last week of action across college baseball.
How’d Canadians fare? Glad you asked. Let’s take a look.
Silva helps Huskers win Big Ten
Riley Silva (Cambridge, Ont.) pounded out six hits and drove in two runs as the University of Nebraska won the Big Ten Conference tournament for the second year in a row. Silva has a .293 average on the season.
Rumberg named to All-Championship team
George Mason hurler Logan Rumberg (Okotoks, Alta.) was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Championship team thanks to a pair of appearances. He tossed four scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits, walking one and striking out six to pick up the win over Saint Joseph’s. The right-hander then got the start against Saint Louis and worked five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out seven and earned his second victory. The Patriots would eventually fall in the championship game to Rhode Island.
Gillespie the modern all-time Canadian D1 strikeout leader
Blake Gillespie (Lucan, Ont.) fanned 13 over eight innings to help the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to a 7-1 win over Wichita State to open the American Athletic Conference tournament. He allowed a run on four hits and a walk. The 13 strikeouts gave him 131 over 100 1/3 innings, good for most all-time in a season by a Canadian in Division I since 1999 when records first started being kept. He passed left-hander R.J Swindle (Vancouver, BC) of the Charleston Southern Buccaneers. The 49ers would go on to lose two straight and be eliminated.

Doucette has five hits, drives in three
Ty Doucette (Darmouth, N.S.) went 3-for-4 with a solo home run as Rutgers opened the Big Ten tournament with a 5-2 win over Indiana. Next up was a showdown with Iowa that saw Doucette go 2-for-5 with two RBIs in a 4-3 loss. The defeat ended the Scarlet Knights’ season.
Green’s four hits not enough for Niagara
In a winner-moves-on game between Niagara and Quinnipiac in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament, Jason Green (Georgetown, Ont.) stroked four hits and drove in a run. Despite the big offensive day, the Purple Eagles fell 10-5.
Beck with three hits
Carter Beck (Carnduff, Sask.) went 3-for-3 with a walk as Indiana State dropped their opener of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament to Illinois State, 14-4. With the loss, the Sycamores season came to an end.
Leroux launches big home run
Tied 6-6 with Rice in the bottom of the eighth of Game 2 of the American Athletic Conference tournament, Florida Atlantic’s Brando Leroux (Markham, Ont.) hit a two-run home run to put the Owls ahead for good. Over three games in the tournament, he had three hits, a walk and two RBIs.
UBC bows out of NAIA World Series
The University of British Columbia dropped games to Georgia Gwinnett and Loyola in the NAIA World Series to see their season end.
Jonny McGill (Richmond, BC) had four hits, a walk and two RBIs. He doubled in both games and hit a two-run shot in the 12-9 loss to Loyola.
David Draayers (Abbotsford, BC), David Krahn (Langley, BC), Kyle Yip (Langley, BC) and Kaden Zarowny (Strathmore Alta.) all had impressive performances at the plate against Loyola.
Draayers went 3-for-5 with an RBI, Krahn had three hits and drove in three, Yip legged out three doubles as part of a four-hit game with an RBI and Zarowny collected two hits.
The Thunderbirds finish the season with a 39-19 record.
Good morning, Good afternoon, Good Knight
Right-hander Logan Knight (London, Ont.) stepped up when his North Dakota State teammates needed him the most during The Summit League championship. Facing the top seeded Oral Roberts Golden Eagles, Knight tossed a complete game shutout in a 4-0 victory. He surrendered three hits, walked three and struck out three. The Bison would go on to win the championship and clinch a spot in the regionals. His start landed him on the All-Tournament team.
As the number of college teams still playing drops, this weekly list gets shorter.
But that doesn’t mean there aren’t still performances worth noting.
Check back in a week to stay caught up.
