SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Centre fielder Noah Marcelo homered twice as part of a five-hit performance Tuesday evening as the Winnipeg Goldeyes defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries 9-6.

Winnipeg opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Marcelo led off with a double to left field, while third baseman Keshawn Lynch and catcher Raphaël Pelletier (Repentigny, Que.) each drew a walk. With the bases loaded and two out, second baseman Peyton Holt walked to force Marcelo home and give the Goldeyes a 1-0 lead.

The Goldeyes added two runs in the third. First baseman Ramón Bramasco and shortstop Adam Hall (London, Ont.) singled before Marcelo loaded the bases with a base hit to centre field. Lynch followed with a single to right that brought Bramasco and Hall home to make it 3-0.

Winnipeg broke the game open with four runs in the fourth inning. Holt doubled to centre and scored on Hall’s single to right. Marcelo then doubled to left, driving in Bramasco and Hall, before scoring on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 7-0.

Sioux Falls got on the board in the bottom half when Trevor Achenbach hit a two-run home run to left field. Marcelo answered in the sixth with a solo shot to centre, giving Winnipeg an 8-2 advantage.

The Canaries chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. TJ Racherbaumer doubled home Michael Curialle, and Joe Vos singled in Anthony Hall to make it 8-4. Sioux Falls pulled to within two in the seventh when Jabari Henry hit a ground-rule double that scored Josh Rehwaldt before coming home on a wild pitch.

Marcelo provided the Goldeyes with an insurance run in the eighth, belting his second home run of the night to left field for the final 9-6 margin. He finished 5-for-6 with two doubles, two home runs, four runs and four runs batted in. Marcelo now leads Winnipeg with 76 RBIs, while his 15 home runs rank second on the club.

Right-hander Landen Bourassa (Lethbridge, Alta.) worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out seven and walking two. Sage Ferguson pitched a scoreless eighth before Derrick Cherry struck out two in a perfect ninth inning.

Christian Edwards allowed seven runs on eight hits over four innings for Sioux Falls. He walked six and struck out four.

Holt, whom the Goldeyes signed earlier Tuesday after he appeared in 12 games for the Kansas City Monarchs earlier this season, went 1-for-3 with a double, two walks, a run scored, and a stolen base.

Kansas City defeated the Lincoln Saltdogs 3-2 Tuesday, meaning the Monarchs maintain a half-game lead over Winnipeg in the West Division.

The series continues Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. Left-hander Ryo Kohigashi is scheduled to start for Winnipeg, while Sioux Falls will counter with right-hander Nicholai Arbach.
