KANSAS CITY, KAN. – The Winnipeg Goldeyes scored twice in the top of the 10th inning and held on to defeat the Kansas City Monarchs 11-9 Saturday evening at Legends Field.

Kansas City opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when first baseman Saúl Garza hit a three-run home run to right field.

The Goldeyes pulled even in the top of the fourth. Shortstop Adam Hall (London, Ont.) and first baseman Ray-Patrick Didder walked before second baseman Keshawn Lynch hit a three-run home run to left field.

Designated hitter Roby Enríquez gave Winnipeg a 4-3 lead with a solo home run to right field in the fifth.

The Goldeyes added two runs in the sixth. Lynch singled and right fielder Max Murphy doubled before Lynch scored on a balk and Murphy came home on left fielder Peyton Holt's sacrifice fly, making it 6-3.

Monarchs third baseman Austin Callahan answered with a two-run single in the bottom half to cut Winnipeg's lead to 6-5.

Third baseman Ramón Bramasco singled in the seventh and scored on Didder's double to left field. Callahan's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth trimmed the margin to 7-6.

Winnipeg scored twice in the ninth. Bramasco walked and Hall singled before centre fielder Noah Marcelo hit a ground-rule double to left field that brought Bramasco home. After Lynch was intentionally walked, Murphy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Hall and give the Goldeyes a 9-6 advantage.

Kansas City rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by centre fielder Hudson Head and a two-run home run by catcher Onix Vega.

Holt began the tenth inning at second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Kevin García before scoring the go-ahead run on Enríquez's groundout. Bramasco followed with a solo home run to left field to make it 11-9.

Starting right-hander James Bradwell (North Vancouver, B.C.) allowed three runs on seven hits over four innings. He walked three and struck out six. James Colyer gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits and one walk in 1 1/3 innings and struck out two. Sage Ferguson recorded four strikeouts in 1 2/3 hitless innings.

Eli Saul (Vancouver, B.C.) allowed one run without surrendering a hit in 2/3 of an inning, walking three. Derrick Cherry was charged with three runs on five hits and two walks over 1 1/3 innings and struck out one. Mitchell Lambson allowed one hit and struck out two in a scoreless tenth inning.

Kansas City left-hander Sawyer Allen allowed six runs on six hits and two walks over six innings, striking out five. Tyler Myrick surrendered one earned run on one hit in the 10th.

Bramasco went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Hall and Lynch had two hits apiece. Lynch drove in three runs, and Enríquez homered and collected two runs batted in.

Marcelo's ninth-inning RBI raised his season total to 91, giving him sole possession of third place on the Goldeyes' single-season list. He broke a tie with Juan Díaz, who drove in 90 runs in 2009.

Hall's fifth-inning stolen base was his 45th of the season, moving him past Adam Heisler's 2015 total for sole possession of third place in club history.

Fargo-Moorhead's loss to Milwaukee earlier Saturday guaranteed that Winnipeg can finish no worse than second in the American Association West Division. The Goldeyes will host Game 2 of the best-of-three West Division Series Friday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m. at Blue Cross Park, as well as Game 3, if necessary, Saturday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m.

Winnipeg's postseason opponent is to be determined. As West Division champion, Kansas City may choose to face either Fargo-Moorhead or Sioux Falls. The Goldeyes will play the club the Monarchs do not select.

The four-game series continues Sunday at 1:05 p.m. C.T. at Legends Field. Right-hander Aidan Newton (Calgary, Alta.) is scheduled to start for Winnipeg, while Kansas City will counter with right-hander Michael Mariot.
