In the same week that Gianfranco Morello earned first-team College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSida) Academic All-District honours, the Toronto, Ont., native proved once again that he’s more than just an excellent student.

Batting third and playing second base for the University of Charleston Golden Eagles, the 5-foot-11 Canuck had six hits - including two doubles and a triple - and five RBIs in the first two games of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) tournament to lead his club to back-to-back wins.

Heading into Saturday’s action, Morello is batting .364 with three home runs, 18 doubles, four triples and 35 RBIs in his senior season. He has also scored 45 runs and stole 24 bases, which has made him the career leader for the Golden Eagles. For his efforts, he was named to the All-MEC First-Team on Wednesday.

In the classroom, the former Ontario Blue Jay and Thornhill Red, is majoring in political science and has maintained an impressive 3.9 GPA.
