Now Peter Hutzal will help next year when it is time to say:
“We are ... Marshall!”
That became the chants that binds and illustrated school spirit after a 1970 plane crash killed all 75 people aboard, including most of the football team, staff and many fans.
This spring INF Hutzal (Calgary, Alta.) a graduate of the Okotoks Dawgs will be joined by RHP Ryan Capuano (Scarborough, Ont.) a former Toronto Met.
Hutzal batted .266 with seven doubles, 12 homers and 32 RBIs in 49 games, while compiling a .863 OPS.
His home-run total as a sophomore was the second best on the team, thanks to multi-home run games against Florida International and Ohio. His season high bests in RBI came against Florida Atlantic (four) RBIs and hits (three hits) facing Old Dominion. He grounded into just one double play all season.
His freshman season he spent with Iowa Western Reivers hitting .292 with two doubles, two triples and 24 RBIs. He had an .747 OPS in 40 games. And he has his birthday Jan. 21.
Next fall the “We are ... Marshall!” chorus doubles as C-1B Ryan Leitch, (Whitby, Ont.) and 1B Zach Gardiner (Oakville, Ont.), both from the Torornto Mets, join Hutzal and Capuano.
