Los Angeles Dodgers outfield prospect Charles Davalan led Canadian minor leaguers in batting average (.500), hits (11), runs (6) and OPS (1.636) last week.
For his efforts, the St-Bruno-De-Montarville, Que., native has been named the Canadian Baseball Network’s Minor League Player of the Week (July 21 to July 26).
In five games for the Dodgers’ High-A Great Lakes Loons, Davalan also had three home runs, three doubles and six RBIs.
Batting leadoff and playing centre field for the Loons, Davalan started last week with a double and a solo home run in the Loons’ 9-6 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts on Tuesday.
He added two more hits - a double and a single - to help the Loons rebound for a 4-2 win the following day. He repeated that performance on Friday in the Loons’ 3-1 loss to the Lugnuts.
On Saturday, he belted a leadoff home run and added a single and a walk and scored two runs in the Loons’ 8-5 loss.
But he saved his best for last when belted a solo home run and also had a triple and a single and drove in three runs when the Loons were edged 8-7 by the Lugnuts on Sunday.
With this hot stretch, Davalan has boosted his season batting average to .284 and he has 16 home runs, 55 RBIs and 15 stolen bases in 84 games for the Loons. He also owns a .402 on-base percentage and a .918 slugging percentage.
Selected in the first round (41st overall) in last year’s draft, the 22-year-old Canadian is in his first full season in the Dodgers’ organization.
