Emilien Pitre has been so good for the double-A Montgomery Biscuits this season that the New York Mets wanted him included in their deal with the Tampa Bay Rays for veteran right-hander Freddy Peralta on Sunday.
And if the Mets had any doubts about the Repentigny, Que., native’s skills, his performance last week erased them.
In five games with the Biscuits, Pitre had 10 hits and batted .476 — both of those numbers topped Canadian hitters in the affiliated minor league ranks last week and helped him secure the Canadian Baseball Network’s Minor League Player of Week award (July 28 to Aug. 2).
It was the second CBN weekly honour for Pitre this season. He also captured the honour for the week of May 12 to May 17.
Batting seventh and playing second base, Pitre started last week by going 2-for-5 with a triple to help the Biscuits to an 8-7 win over the Milwaukee Brewers’ double-A Biloxi Shuckers on Tuesday.
He followed that up with three hits - including a double - and a walk in another Biscuits’ one-run victory.
After going 1-for-4 in the Biscuits’ 9-8 loss on Thursday, the ABC grad had his third multi-hit game of the week (two singles) in his club’s 14-8 loss on Friday.
And in what turned out to be his final game with the Biscuits on Saturday, Pitre went 2-for-4 with two runs, two walks and an RBI to help his team to a 17-8 rout of the Shuckers.
Pitre completed the week with five runs, a .619 slugging percentage and a 1.212 OPS.
This hot stretch boosted his season average between the Biscuits and the High-A Bowling Green Hot Rods to .308. He also owns a .438 on-base percentage and has four triples and 32 stolen bases in 88 games.
Selected in the second round of the 2024 MLB draft by the Rays, Pitre will report to the Mets’ double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies.
