A downpour didn’t dampen any spirits at Dorchester’s Royal Field as the 2027 CPBL Prospect Game played on Saturday despite the weather.
After a wet night full of offence, the game was called following the top of the ninth inning. Team Black edged out Team White 17-14.
Despite all the hard-hit balls, it was pitcher Elliot Malo (Contrecoeur, Que.) who took home the bat shaped MVP award.
“When I heard them call ABC and started with a four, I thought it was going to be (Gabriel) Lehoullier (Levis, Que.) with his bomb early in the game,” Malo said with a laugh, “I never thought I could win MVP as a pitcher, I mean, the award is a bat.”
The uncommitted ABC left-hander tossed one of the only clean innings of the game, going 1 ⅓ innings with three strikeouts.
“I just wanted to attack out there. The game was long and slow, so I wanted to get guys to bat fast,” Malo explained, “that’s always my approach as a pitcher, get two strikes and end up well.”
It was actually Team White who opened the scoring right in the first inning. As Malo said, his ABC teammate Lehoullier crushed a two-run home run on the first pitch he saw.
The lead didn’t last long however, as Team Black immediately answered with nine runs in the second frame.
A wild pitch scored one run, then ABC struck again as Alekk Biasone (Quebec, Que.) hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
From there, the flood gates opened. North Dakota State commit Sam Ellis (La Peche, Ont.) got an RBI on a bases loaded walk, Fieldhouse Pirate Alex Wallace (Oakville, Ont.) scored one more with a single, and Wright State commit Galen Hudel (Waterloo, Ont.) bashed an RBI double.
Team Black also added four runs on errors and wild pitches.
Team White did make a valiant effort to comeback from the deficit, even retaking the lead in the bottom of the fourth.
With the game at 9-8, Toronto Met Evan Walker (Ajax, Ont.) hit an automatic double for an RBI, and Lehoullier nearly hit a second home run, but settled for a sacrifice fly nearly 400 feet out in centre field to take the lead.
The game stayed close from there until the top of the seventh inning. It started tied 11-11, but Team Black took the lead again and didn’t look back this time.
Hudel scored another run, this time with a single, and Noah Glenn (Queensville, Ont.) of the Toronto Mets cashed in one more with a 4-3 ground out. The wild inning ended with a wild pitch that led to a run to make it 14-11 Team Black.
They would hold on to that lead for the rest of the game, eventually winning 17-14 after the game was called following the top of the ninth.
Other batters who picked up an RBI in front of the scouts included:
-GLC rep Christian Heffernan (Puslinch, Ont.)
-Ontario Blue Jay Christian Caminero (Mississauga, Ont.)
-Fieldhouse Pirate and Utah Utes commit Will Henderson (Mississauga, Ont.)
-GLC hitter Caleb Quack (Breslau, Ont.)
-Fellow GLC bat Lucas Mclinchey (Strathroy, Ont.)
-ABC member Ludovic Therriault (Saint Malo, Que.)
-Charles Lepine (Quebec City, Que.), also of ABC
-Shayne Gagne (Long Sault, Ont.) representing ONC.

The 14U minor game is now set for 1 p.m., while the 14U major game will throw their first pitch at 5 p.m.
