'Who Killed the Montreal Expos?'
That's the title of a documentary being released Oct. 21 by Netflix.
The streaming service announced the release date today, saying many former Expos, journalists, owners and huge fans were interviewed for the epic, which follows on the heels of the documentary produced several years ago by Robbie Hart.
The Netflix project explores the setbacks and trials and tribulations involved with the departure of the Expos to Washington following the 2004 season.
Pedro and Dennis Martinez, Larry Walker and Felipe Alou are among those interviewed along with legendary manager Felipe Alou.
Claude Brochu, the managing general partner of the Expos from 1991-1999, was also miked up for the film as was David Samson, step-son of Jeffrey Loria, who owned the team from 1999-2002.
The documentary is directed by Jean-Francois Poisson and produced by Stephanie Thibault. The executive producers are Richard Speer, Marie-Christine Pouliot and Nick Trotta.
The Netflix doc was produced in conjunction with Canadian film production company Attraction Images.
The project was first announced to me in an email by Attraction officials Nancy Audet and Sophie Charest on Oct. 23, 2023. The official announcement was made by Netflix in February of 2024.
Audet and Charest said they wanted to interview me for the documentary but neither of them called me back. I guess being an author of 11 Expos books doesn't count.
