Goldeyes' Newton blanks RedHawks in complete-game win

FARGO, N.D. – Rookie right-hander Aidan Newton (Calgary, Alta.) threw the first complete game and shutout of his career as the Winnipeg Goldeyes defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 8-0 Tuesday evening at Newman Outdoor Field.

Winnipeg scored three times in the top of the first inning against Fargo-Moorhead. Third baseman Ramón Bramasco singled and shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder walked before centre fielder Noah Marcelo opened the scoring with a base hit to right field. After left fielder Keshawn Lynch walked, right fielder Max Murphy brought Didder home with a fielder's choice, and first baseman Roby Enríquez followed with a run-scoring bunt single that made it 3-0.

The Goldeyes added a run in the second. Bramasco and designated hitter Adam Hall (London, Ont.) walked and advanced on a passed ball before Didder lifted a sacrifice fly to left field.

Second baseman Peyton Holt singled and stole second base to begin the fourth, then scored on catcher Kevin García's sacrifice fly to right field to increase Winnipeg's lead to 5-0.

Winnipeg put the game out of reach with three more runs in the fifth. Didder singled and stole second, while Marcelo walked and also stole second. Murphy then drove both runners home with a triple to left field, and Enríquez singled to right to score Murphy and make it 8-0.

Newton allowed five hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out one. He threw 86 pitches.

Fargo-Moorhead right-hander Kolby Kiser allowed four runs on three hits over three innings. He walked four and struck out two. Henson Leal surrendered four runs, three earned, on five hits over three innings, while Mason Pelio worked a scoreless seventh.

Murphy finished 1-for-4 with a triple and three runs batted in, while Enríquez went two-for-four with two RBIs. Marcelo's first-inning RBI increased his season total to 87, and his two stolen bases gave him 38 on the year.

The victory gave Winnipeg a split of Tuesday's action after Fargo-Moorhead won the completion of a June 15 suspended game 17-7 earlier in the evening.

The Goldeyes' magic number to clinch a postseason berth is one. A Winnipeg win or Sioux City Explorers loss will send the Goldeyes to the postseason for the first time since 2024.

The series continues Wednesday at 7:02 p.m. Left-hander Kevin Vaupel is scheduled to start for Winnipeg, while Fargo-Moorhead will counter with right-hander Kyle Crigger.
