Goldeyes set franchise record with 12th straight win

WINNIPEG, MAN. – The Winnipeg Goldeyes made history Thursday, rallying to defeat the Chicago Dogs 7-5 at Blue Cross Park for a franchise-record 12th straight victory.

Winnipeg jumped out to an early lead, scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning. Shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder opened the frame with a double to left field before third baseman Ramón Bramasco brought him home with a single up the middle. Later in the inning, left fielder Keshawn Lynch singled to right, scoring Bramasco and second baseman Adam Hall (London, Ont.) to give the Goldeyes a 3-0 advantage.

Chicago steadily worked its way back into the game. Shortstop Ethan Wilder drove in second baseman Nick Roselli with a third-inning single to right, and centre fielder Giovanni DiGiacomo brought home right fielder Nick Stokes an inning later to pull the Dogs within a run.

The visitors completed the comeback in the fifth. First baseman Chance Sisco scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 3-3 before catcher Jaxx Groshans launched a two-out solo home run to left field, giving Chicago its first lead of the night.

Winnipeg’s response came in the seventh.

Right fielder Max Murphy scored on Didder’s sacrifice fly to right to even the score before Bramasco delivered the decisive blow. With two outs, he drove a two-run home run down the right-field line, putting the Goldeyes back in front 6-4.

The Dogs continued to threaten in the eighth, trimming the deficit to one when Roselli’s infield single scored third baseman Derek Maiben. Chicago eventually put the potential tying and go-ahead runs aboard, but Winnipeg escaped the inning with its 6-5 lead intact.

The Goldeyes added a valuable insurance run in the bottom half when designated hitter Jiandido Tromp lifted a sacrifice fly to centre, bringing home centre fielder Noah Marcelo and restoring Winnipeg’s two-run cushion at 7-5.

Arij Fransen earned the victory in relief of starter Ryo Kohigashi, allowing just one hit over two scoreless innings beginning in the sixth. Eli Saul (Vancouver, B.C.) also worked out of the Winnipeg bullpen before Derrick Cherry closed the door in the ninth. Cherry issued a leadoff walk, then retired the next three batters to secure the victory.

Regi Grace Jr. took the loss for Chicago after replacing Connor Lockwood in the seventh. Grace surrendered three runs on two hits, including Bramasco’s go-ahead home run.

The Goldeyes will now travel to Lincoln, Neb., where they will open a three-game weekend series against the Saltdogs Friday at Haymarket Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Right-hander Aidan Newton will take the mound for Winnipeg, while Lincoln will counter with fellow right-hander Cael Chatham.
