Hall, Pelletier help Goldeyes - or Mosquitoes- to win

WINNIPEG, MAN. – The Manitoba Mosquitoes came out buzzing, building a commanding early lead en route to an 11-4 victory over the Lincoln Saltdogs Friday evening at Blue Cross Park.

The Mosquitoes — the Winnipeg Goldeyes’ wildly successful first foray into the alternate-identity trend — swarmed the downtown ballpark for one night only.

Manitoba drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning when left fielder Keshawn Lynch lined a two-run single to left field, scoring shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder and second baseman Adam Hall (London, Ont.). Catcher Raphaël Pelletier (Repentigny, Que.) followed with a two-run double to right field that brought home centre fielder Noah Marcelo and Lynch to make it 4-0. First baseman Kevin García capped the five-run inning with a sacrifice fly to left, allowing Pelletier to score from third.

In the bottom of the second, Didder scored on a delayed double steal to make it 6-0 before Marcelo reached on a fielding error that allowed Hall to score Manitoba’s seventh run of the game.

The Mosquitoes proved impossible to swat away, striking for four more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Didder blooped a two-run double to left-centre, driving in García and right fielder Roby Enríquez. Marcelo then doubled down the left-field line to bring home Didder and Hall, extending Manitoba’s lead to 11-0.

Lincoln finally found a way to repel Mosquitoes starter Ryo Kohigashi in the fifth inning. Second baseman Paul Myro singled up the middle to drive in centre fielder Cam Phelts and left fielder Jairo Pomares, cutting the deficit to 11-2. Third baseman Calyn Halvorson followed with a two-run double down the right-field line, bringing home right fielder Cary Arbolida and Myro to make it 11-4. Kohigashi exited one out shy of qualifying for the win.

Kohigashi allowed four runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings, striking out nine and walking two. The 28-year-old ranks second in the American Association with 79 strikeouts this season. Arij Fransen, Willian Suárez, and Sage Ferguson combined to pitch 4 1/3 scoreless innings in relief as Manitoba’s pitching staff finished with 14 strikeouts.

Saltdogs starter Alex Johnson allowed 10 runs — nine earned — on five hits over just two innings while issuing five walks. Cam Dayton was outstanding in relief, pitching the final six innings and surrendering only one run on one hit.

Despite being limited to six hits, the Mosquitoes received three runs batted in from Marcelo, while Didder and Hall each scored three times.

The series continues Saturday at 6 p.m., with the Goldeyes sending right-hander James Colyer to the mound. The Saltdogs will counter with right-hander Cael Chatham.
