WINNIPEG, MAN. – The Winnipeg Goldeyes scored six unanswered runs over the final three innings to rally past the Sioux City Explorers 6-2 Sunday afternoon before 6,825 fans at Blue Cross Park.
Sioux City opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Henry George hit a solo home run to right field.
The Explorers doubled their advantage in the fourth. Alberto Osuna singled and D’Shawn Knowles doubled before Jackson Van De Brake lifted a sacrifice fly to centre field that scored Osuna and made it 2-0.
Winnipeg broke through in the sixth. Left fielder Jiandido Tromp drew a leadoff walk and catcher Raphaël Pelletier (Repentigny, Que.) moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Designated hitter Max Murphy then lined a single to right field that brought Tromp home and cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Goldeyes took control with a three-run seventh. Third baseman Ramón Bramasco walked and stole second before centre fielder Noah Marcelo doubled to left field to tie the game. Second baseman Keshawn Lynch followed with an RBI triple to right that gave Winnipeg its first lead of the afternoon, and Pelletier singled home Lynch to make it 4-2.
Winnipeg added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Murphy led off with his second double of the game before shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder doubled him home. Right fielder Adam Hall (London, Ont.) later singled to right field to score Didder and increase the lead to 6-2.
Left-hander Kevin Vaupel turned in six solid innings for Winnipeg, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five and walking one.
James Colyer followed with a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. Eli Saul (Vancouver, B.C.) and Derrick Cherry each worked a scoreless frame to close out the victory.
Zach Willeman allowed three runs on 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings for Sioux City. He struck out three and walked four.
Murphy led Winnipeg’s 15-hit attack by going four-for-five with two doubles, a run scored, and an RBI. Hall went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two stolen bases, while Bramasco reached base five times with two hits and three walks. Didder had two hits, including an RBI double.
The victory allowed Winnipeg to salvage the finale of the three-game series after Sioux City won the first two contests.
The Goldeyes are off Monday before opening a three-game series against the Sioux Falls Canaries Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. C.T. in Sioux Falls. Right-hander Landen Bourassa (Lethbridge, Alta.) is scheduled to start for Winnipeg, while the Canaries will counter with right-hander Christian Edwards.
