Hall's heroics lead Goldeyes to eighth straight win

WINNIPEG, MAN – Second baseman Adam Hall hit a go-ahead two-run home run with two out in the bottom of the eighth inning, lifting the Winnipeg Goldeyes to their eighth consecutive victory Sunday afternoon – a 7-6 win over the Lincoln Saltdogs at Blue Cross Park.

With Lincoln leading 6-5 and pinch-runner Raphaël Pelletier (Repentigny, Que.) at first base, Hall (London, Ont.) belted a 0-1 pitch from Saltdogs right-hander Zac McCleve over the left-field wall to give Winnipeg a 7-6 lead.

Goldeyes closer Derrick Cherry entered in the top of the ninth and worked around a two-out walk to centre fielder Cam Phelts, striking out shortstop Nick Shumpert to end the game.

Eli Saul (Vancouver, B.C.) pitched a perfect eighth inning to earn the victory.

Winnipeg opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when centre fielder Noah Marcelo hit a two-out, two-run home run to left field with shortstop Ray-Patrick Didder aboard.

After a scoreless second inning, the Saltdogs took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third. Designated hitter Tanner O’Tremba doubled down the right-field line to bring home left fielder Jairo Pomares and right fielder Cary Arbolida, tying the game. Third baseman Calyn Halvorson then lined a single to centre field to score O’Tremba.

The Goldeyes responded in the bottom half of the inning. Third baseman Keshawn Lynch led off with an arcing home run to left that tied the game 3-3 before Didder gave Winnipeg a two-run lead with a single to left field that drove in first baseman Roby Enríquez and right fielder Max Murphy.

Lincoln erased the lead in its next at-bat. Shumpert drove in first baseman Cam Dayton with a single to centre field, cutting Winnipeg’s advantage to 5-4. Two batters later, Arbolida hit a two-run double to left that brought home catcher Griffin Everitt and Shumpert, giving the Saltdogs a 6-5 lead.

James Bradwell (North Vancouver, B.C.) started for Winnipeg and worked 4 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking one. In addition to Saul and Cherry, Quinn Waterhouse and Willian Suárez appeared out of the Goldeyes’ bullpen, which limited Lincoln to two hits over the final 4 2/3 innings.

Saltdogs starter Foster Pace worked five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked one.

Winnipeg is off Monday before hosting the Chicago Dogs for a four-game series that begins with a doubleheader Tuesday. The twin bill, consisting of two seven-inning games, was made necessary when the contest originally scheduled for July 5 at Impact Field in Rockford, Illinois, was rained out.

The opener is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. The Goldeyes will send Luke Boyd to the mound, while Chicago will counter with fellow right-hander Brendan Roberts.

The nightcap will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Winnipeg has not announced its starter, while the Dogs are expected to turn to right-hander Dwayne Marshall (0-0, 6.00 ERA)
