Reyes’ homer sends Cardinals to CBL final

BARRIE, ONT. – Hamilton is off to the Canadian Baseball League championship.

The league’s top regular season team needed extra innings to beat Barrie 5-4 on Saturday and clinch the best-of-seven series in six games. The Cardinals will face Welland in the final.

Hamilton third baseman Reyny Reyes broke a 4-4 tie with a solo home run on the first pitch of the 11th off Baycats’ reliever Oscar Moreta. Reyes also started the scoring with a two-run single in the first inning. Evan Magill had two hits and an RBI, Angel Guerrero drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Tyler Duncan singled twice and stole a base.

Freisis Adames struck out three over two scoreless innings to get the win on the mound. Logan Warkentin locked down the save after giving up a leadoff hit.

Owen Boon started and went six frames, allowing two runs on seven hits with three walks and three punchouts.

Nolan Machibroda went 4-for-5 with two RBIs for the fifth-place Baycats, who advanced to the semifinal after beating Guelph in the wild card game.

Francisco Hernandez and Noel McGarry Doyle each had two hits and scored a run. McGarry Doyle swiped a pair of bases.

Moreta threw 4 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. He replaced starter Saul Vasquez, who allowed three runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings. He walked three and fanned five.

Jackfish eliminate Majors

WELLAND, ONT. – Welland advanced to the CBL final after a 15-6 win over London on Saturday.

The Jackfish, after losing the first two games, won the best-of-seven series 4-2.

Greyson Barrett went 3-for-6 with two home runs and six RBIs for Welland, which broke the game open with eight runs in the eighth inning. Brendan Luther had three hits, including a solo home run, and scored five times.

Daiki Abe singled twice and drove in a run, Jonah Weisner went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Ethan Mann racked up three singles, James Smibert went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Justin Gideon singled home a run and added a sacrifice fly, and Robert Mullen drove in a run.

Teodoro Ortega went 6 1/3 innings for the win. He allowed five runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Deivy Mendez gave up a run on three hits over 2 2/3 innings for his first playoff save. He struck out three.

For London, Maikol Escotto went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run. Eduardo De Oleo also connected for a two-run blast. Trent Lenihan and Jarrett Burney both had an RBI, and Tucker Zdunich singled, doubled and scored twice.

Travis Keys took the loss after yielding six runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out one and walked a pair of batters.
