It didn’t take Charles Davalan long to adjust to professional baseball.
In his first week playing pro games, after being activated by the Los Angeles Dodgers’ class-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, the St-Bruno-De-Montarville, Que., native went 11-for-21 (.579 batting average). He also topped all Canadians in the affiliated minor league ranks in slugging percentage (.842), OPS (1.461), stolen bases (3) and RBIs (8).
For his efforts, he has been named the Canadian Baseball Network’s minor league Player of the Week.
In his pro baseball debut, Davalan batted leadoff and started in centre field and went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and a walk in the Quakes’ 14-8 loss to the Modesto Nuts.
He added a hit, a walk and two stolen bases the following day to help the Quakes to a 4-2 win.
However, he saved he best performances for later in the week.
On Friday, the 5-foot-9, 190-pound outfielder went 4-for-6 with a triple and three RBIs in the Quakes’ 9-8 victory.
For an encore, he had four more hits - including his first professional home run - and four RBIs on Saturday in a Quakes’ 14-7 win.
Davalan’s outstanding first week in the pros came just over a month after he was selected 41st overall by the Dodgers out of the University of Arkansas in the MLB draft. The 21-year-old ABC alum batted .346 with 14 home runs and 60 RBIs in 65 games for the Razorbacks this spring.
