Neufeld: A look into New Blue's fairytale finish at 2026 Canadian Futures Showcase

From the first pitch, Team New Blue knew they were working with something special.

“I think our team is going to be really solid […] everybody’s worked hard, everybody’s kind, and we all really get along,” said shortstop Will Henzi (Victoria, B.C.) following a 5-0 shutout win over Team Red to kick off the Blue Jays Academy Canadian Futures Showcase.

The team’s perfect round-robin record (4-0) took them to the showcase final on Sunday, where their fairytale run came to a close with the lifting of the championship trophy thanks to a 6-1 win over Team Royal.

Through ebbs and flows, countless momentum shifts, and 15+ hour days, New Blue worked together to achieve the common goal. Following their first matchup against Royal earlier in the tournament, pitcher Caleb Quack (Breslau, Ont.) further attested to the energy felt in the dugout, saying “we trusted in what we could do and just battled.”

After taking home the championship, head coach and Canadian Baseball Hall of Famer, Matt Stairs (Fredericton, N.B.) shared his perspective on the boys’ camaraderie.

“As a coaching staff you try to bring as much positivity as you can with these young athletes,” he said. “The way they played the game was the right way; they enjoyed it, they had fun, and they were very positive with everyone so it makes our job really easy.”

What stood out most to Stairs was the team’s unyielding grit.

“They grind, they went out every inning and played their heart out,” he continued “They never took any inning off this whole tournament, which is very easy at this age.”

Stairs went on to express the pride that he and the staff felt towards this group of young men regarding the way they all showed up and their level of preparation across the board.

Showcase standout Will Henderson (Mississauga, Ont.) also spoke to his experience following their title-clinching win. He shared his view on the opportunity stating, “A big part of this tournament is getting Canadians exposed to these scouts […] Getting to see familiar faces and so many new ones was huge.”

Agreeing with a statement from Stairs regarding the strength of this group, Henderson offered: “We won it last year with Royal but this year with New Blue, it’s not even close.”

The strong sense of brotherhood was felt by more than just a select few. Hudson Harding (Calgary, Alta.) was among the many players walking away with a profound sense of gratitude.

“Everyone was always up, no bad seeds or anything, everyone was just great. […] by far the most fun week of baseball I’ve had,” he said.

Though this chapter has come to an end, many of these athletes’ stories are only just getting underway as they look to continue chasing the ultimate baseball dream – a chance at the big leagues.
