Right-hander Cal Quantrill has signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers.
The deal includes an invite to big league spring training.
Evan Grant, of the Dallas Morning News, was the first to report the transaction last night.
Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.) finished the 2025 season by posting a 1.64 ERA and striking out 14 batters in 11 innings in two starts for the Rangers’ triple-A Round Rock Express in September.
The Rangers were the third organization Quantrill played with in 2025.
After signing a one-year, $3.5-million contract with the Miami Marlins in February, the 6-foot-3 righty proceeded to go 4-10 with a 5.50 ERA in 24 starts with them before being selected off waivers by the Atlanta Braves on August 21.
He’d make two big league starts with the Braves and then sign a minor league deal with the Rangers.
Despite his struggles in 2025, Quantrill still made 26 starts and pitched 117 2/3 innings – both of which ranked second among Canadian-born major leaguers. He has made at least 19 starts in each of the last five seasons.
Quantrill signed with the Marlins last year after he had been non-tendered by the Colorado Rockies following the 2024 campaign. He went 8-11 with a 4.98 ERA in 29 starts for the Rockies in 2024 and led Canadian big-league pitchers in starts and innings pitched (148 1/3). His eight wins and 110 strikeouts ranked second.
The veteran righty was dealt to the Rockies by the Cleveland Guardians on November 17, 2023 after he was limited to 19 starts that year by a shoulder injury.
Quantrill honed his skills with the Ontario Terriers and the Junior National Team before starring at Stanford University. He was selected eighth overall by the San Diego Padres in the 2016 MLB draft and he played parts of three minor league seasons in their organization before making his big-league debut on May 1, 2019.
The 30-year-old Canuck, who started the first game of the 2023 World Baseball Classic for Canada, was on board to pitch again for his country this March. But it’s unclear if this new contract with the Rangers will impact that. Quantrill will likely compete for the fifth starter role with the Rangers this spring.
