The Tampa Bay Rays have called up Canadian outfielder Tristan Peters (Winkler, Man.).
The Rays officially announced the transaction late this afternoon.
An Okotoks Dawgs alum, Peters, 25, has a slash line of .282/.370/.453 in 105 games for the triple-A Durham Bulls this season. He has 11 home runs, 11 stolen bases and 50 walks.
This is his first promotion to the big leagues.
A two-time winner of the Canadian Baseball Network’s minor league Player of the Week this season (May 27 to June 1 and June 24 to June 29), Peters has also been outstanding defensively in the outfield for the Bulls this season, his second at the triple-A level.
The left-handed hitting Canuck batted .238 with 12 home runs and eight stolen bases in 123 games for the Bulls in 2024.
This is Peters’ third season in the Rays’ system after being acquired from the San Francisco Giants following the 2022 campaign. He was selected in the seventh round of the 2021 MLB draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. He spent parts of two seasons in the Brewers’ organization prior to being traded to the Giants.
As a teenager, Peters honed his skills with Team Manitoba before he landed with the Okotoks Dawgs Academy. He played one game for the Western Canadian Baseball League’s Okotoks Dawgs in 2018, before enjoying a breakout campaign with them in 2019. That season, he topped the WCBL with a .397 batting average, belted 12 home runs and stole 13 bases in 52 games. For his efforts, he was named the circuit’s Canadian Rookie of the Year and playoff MVP.
Peters began his collegiate career with the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Coyotes in 2019. The following year, he received All-American honours when he batted .354 with 13 stolen bases in a pandemic-shortened season.
In 2019, he was named to the Canadian Baseball Network’s All-Canadian Second Team. Two years later, he was named to CBN’s All-Canadian First Team.
The Rays designated right-hander Connor Seabold for assignment to make room for Peters on their 40-man roster.
