Official Western Canadian Baseball League News Release
The Western Canadian Baseball League joins the Regina Red Sox community in mourning the loss of a talented young pitcher.
Jesse Lubiniecki was involved in a single-vehicle rollover in Rosebud County, Mont. while he was on his way home to Regina from California. The 22-year-old passed away on May 30.
"The Regina Red Sox were devastated to hear of the tragic passing of Jesse Lubiniecki," said the WCBL team in a statement.
"The Red Sox organization would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his parents, Noel and Kim, and his brothers, Luke, Layne and fiancée Cathy. We will play out the season with No. 33 in our hearts."
The right-handed pitcher had spent the past two seasons playing for Taft College, where he made 24 appearances as a reliever.
He pitched in four games with the Red Sox last summer and was entering his second season with the team.
Before embarking on his collegiate career, Lubiniecki studied at Martin Academy in Regina and Prairie Baseball Academy (PBA) in Lethbridge.
"We are incredibly saddened to hear of Jesse's passing and extend our sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones during this terrible time," said WCBL President Kevin Kvame.
"We are also heartbroken for Jesse's teammates and those who got to know him through the baseball community."
The Regina Red Sox host the Medicine Hat Mavericks on Tuesday, June 3 at Currie Field, where the team plans to observe a moment of silence for Lubiniecki. The Red Sox will also add a No. 33 patch to their jerseys to commemorate their fallen teammate.
