Part 1: A Sport of Their Own - Thousands of girls, women playing baseball in Canada

The 1992 movie A League of Their Own told the story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League which existed from 1943 to 1954. More than 60 Canadian women played in the league. The first Baseball Canada-sanctioned national championship for girls’ baseball (16U) was played in 1998. Girls’/women’s baseball has continued to evolve and grow in Canada in the two decades since. Well-travelled Darvill focused on helping national squad at Pan Am qualifier

He is as well-travelled as just about anybody over the course of his 10-year career in professional baseball, but Brazil is a new one for veteran infielder Wes Darvill (Richmond, BC). The 27-year-old has played 10 seasons in professional baseball and is a member of Canada’s Senior National Team for the Pan Am Games Qualification Tournament taking place this week in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Senior National Team ready for Pan Am Games qualifier

After a short training camp in West Palm Beach, Fla., the Canadian Senior National Team is set to embark on a journey to São Paulo, Brazil for the Pan Am Games Qualification Tournament that will take place from January 29 to February 3. The seven-nation event will see the top four squads secure a berth in the Pan American Games baseball competition that will be held in Lima, Peru in July.
