The Ontario Terriers are paying homage to Jackie Robinson today. He was the first black player to cross Major League Baseball’s colour barrier. During the late 40’s and early 50’s after the colour barrier was lifted by professional baseball, many ex-Negro League players travelled to Canada to join various leagues and teams. They were welcomed with open arms, and fit in comfortably with their new surroundings. A number of the players came to Galt Ont., now Cambridge, and played for the Galt Terriers of the Sr. Inter-County Baseball League at Dickson Park.

Ontario University Athletics may not come to mind as a breeding ground for talent bound for professional baseball, but as it happens in many facets of life, the exceptional few find ways to shatter the proverbial glass ceiling and turn heads of those involved in the higher ranks of the game. Burlington, Ont., native Alex Nolan, a right-handed pitcher for the Brock Badgers of the OUA, is hell-bent on being one of those players.

On Sunday, the Jays Care Foundation, the charitable arm of the Toronto Blue Jays, announced that it will make an infrastructure investment of $1.3 million to benefit Canadian children and youth through its Field Of Dreams program. Fifteen organizations located across five provinces and one territory will receive funding to build, enhance, and refurbish baseball diamonds where children and youth can develop important life skills and learn from positive role models.

On April 12, 2019, Principal Suzanne Fortier announced that McGill’s men’s varsity sports teams would no longer be called the “Redmen.” This decision followed an extensive process of consultation and deliberation launched in December 2018, and was implemented with immediate effect.

University of the Fraser Valley baseball star Riley Jepson (Kamloops, B.C.) is heading to the Lone Star State this fall, committing to the NCAA Div-II University of Texas at Tyler.
