Elliott, Jupiter opening day: Blair, Duncan, Jacob, Powell off to fine starts

It’s only a 2,019 miles -- or a 37-hour drive from Victoria, BC to Fairborn, Ohio, home of the Ohio Warhawks.

Or it is 3,415 miles from Victoria to Jupiter, Fla. home of the 27th annual Perfect Game World Wood Bat tournament. It features 120 teams, including 56 Canadians on 10 different teams.

And on Day I, Austin Blair, the Victoria Eagle, was the most successful Canuck.

Pitching for the Warhawks, Blair worked two scoreless as Ohio beat Clubhouse EvoShield 9-1 on a combined no hitter by four pitchers.

Blair pitched the fifth and sixth innings. He allowed one walk, while striking out three. He needed 33 pitches, threw 60% strikes and his velocity peaked at 89 MPH.

Langley Blaze LHP Sean Duncan (Port Coquitlam, BC)

LHP Sean Duncan (Port Coquitlam, BC) started the opener, pitching three innings in a 7-1 Brewers Langley Blaze loss to 5 Star/Chicago Cubs Scout Team. The projected top Canuck for next July allowed two runs on three hits and a walk. He struck out seven being clocked at 94 MPH in his 67-pitch outing, throwing 61% strikes.

2B Luke Laird (Langley, BC), LF Silas Watt (Langley, BC), DH Carter Bestebroer (Chilliwack, BC), RF Finn Hoeschen (North Vancouver, BC) and C Taye Thierman (Calgary, Alta.) each singled for the Blaze

Kason Siguenza (Abbotsford, BC) drove in the only run for the Blaze.

Ontario Blue Jays Jalen Jacob (Maple, Ont.)

DH Jalen Jacob had a pair of hits for Canadian Premier in a 2-0 loss to Dodgers Scout Team/Knights Knation. Canada Premier was only outhit 6-5, but two runs in the top of the seventh made the Dodgers/Knights Knation winners. Jacob (Maple, Ont.) was 2-for-2.

RHP Julian Sabourin (Ancaster, Ont.) pitched three innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out seven in his 54-pitch outing throwing 64% strikes, topping out at 91 MPH.

Noah Powell (Toronto, Ont.) and Zachary Landreville (Jerome, Que.) each had scoreless outings. Powell pitched three innings giving up two hits, while striking out three. Powell threw 39 pitches (56% strikes) clocking out at 92 MPH. Landreville pitched one inning -- needing only nine pitches -- peaking at 90 MPH.

The other hits by Canada Premier were by C Evan York (Waterloo, Ont.), EH Christian Iriotakis (Toronto, Ont.) and 2B Zach Barke (Burlington, Ont.).

C Aidan Asher (Toronto, Ont.) singled for the Royals Scout Team in a 5-4 win against the Royals Scout Team. It was Asher’s only at-bat.
