On Friday night, Chicago White Sox outfielder Tristan Peters became just the second Canadian since 1900 to hit for the cycle in a major league game.
The 26-year-old Winkler, Man., native accomplished the feat in the White Sox 14-1 win over the Athletics at Rate Field in Chicago
Batting ninth, Peters had a double in the third inning, a single in the fourth and a two-run home run in the seventh before tripling in the same inning when the White Sox batted around.
The last Canadian to hit for the cycle was catcher George Kottaras (Scarborough, Ont.) for the Milwaukee Brewers on September 3, 2011. Batting seventh for the Brewers, Kottaras went 4-for-5 to lead his club to an 8-2 win over the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park.
Kottaras’s cycle was the first by a Canadian since Tip O’Neill (Woodstock, Ont.) and George Wood (Pownal, P.E.I.) achieved this feat in the late 19th century.
Peters’ cycle was also the first by a White Sox player since Jose Abreu did it on September 9, 2017 in a 13-1 win over the San Francisco Giants.
According to MLB.com, Peters is just the fifth player in MLB history to record a cycle while batting ninth in the lineup. There have been only 353 cycles in MLB history.
Peters’ 4-for-4 night boosted his season batting average over .300. The Canuck outfielder also had four RBIs. In total, in 89 games in his rookie MLB season, Peters owns a .303/.357/.484 slash line and an .841 OPS. He has 20 doubles, three triples, six home runs and 35 RBIs and has inserted himself into the conversation for the American League Rookie of the Year award.
This is Peters’ first season with the White Sox after he was dealt to them by the Tampa Bay Rays in December for cash considerations.
Peters had a cup of coffee with the Rays last season, going 0-for-12 in four games.
The Manitoba native spent three seasons in the Rays’ system after being acquired from the Giants following the 2022 campaign.
Peters was initially selected in the seventh round of the 2021 MLB draft by the Brewers. He toiled for parts of two seasons in the Brewers’ organization prior to being traded to the Giants.
As a teenager, Peters honed his skills with Team Manitoba before he landed with the Okotoks Dawgs Academy. He played one game for the Western Canadian Baseball League’s Okotoks Dawgs in 2018 before enjoying a breakout campaign with them in 2019. That season, he topped the WCBL with a .397 batting average, belted 12 home runs and stole 13 bases in 52 games. For his efforts, he was named the circuit’s Canadian Rookie of the Year and playoff MVP.
Peters began his collegiate career with the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Coyotes in 2019. The following year, he received All-American honours when he batted .354 with 13 stolen bases in a pandemic-shortened season.
In 2019, he was named to the Canadian Baseball Network’s All-Canadian Second Team. Two years later, he was named to CBN’s All-Canadian First Team following an outstanding collegiate season with the NCAA Division I Southern Illinois Salukis.
