McFarland: Rootman reconnecting with Canadian roots at Futures Showcase

“The Blue Jays Academy Canadian Futures Showcase was the perfect excuse for Ira Rootman to see his grandparents.

It also gave the California native a chance to clear the air about how he ended up north of the 49th parallel for the annual get-together of Canada’s best young high school baseball players.

When combing the list of invitees, Rootman’s name stuck given his place of birth but, as it turns out, his roots run deep across the country.

“Both of my parents (Dan and Jess) are from Vancouver and they lived in Toronto for about 15 years before I was born,” Rootman said. “My sister and I were both born in Toronto before we moved down to LA.”

McFarland: Rodriguez looking to defend HR Derby title and show other skills at Showcase

The target is squarely on the back of Daril Rodriguez and he’s more than okay with it.

The old saying “pressure is privilege” is one that Andersen welcomes with open arms.

“I think, for me, that’s the best,” he says. “That’s when your blood is pumping the most and that’s when the game really starts to be the most fun.”

As Andersen gets ready for his second Blue Jays Academy Canadian Futures Showcase, he’s hoping to take what he’s learned from all of his experiences to put on his best performance so far. “

The Fredericton, New Brunswick native arrived at Dawgs Academy in Okotoks just a couple of years ago to grow his game.

Among his coaches was another New Brunswick native in former Major League Baseball slugger Matt Stairs.”

McFarland: Lejan ready to represent Saskatchewan at Canadian Futures Showcase

“He might be the only one with a Saskatchewan birth certificate going to the Blue Jays Academy Canadian Futures Showcase this season, but it’s not phasing Keaton Lejan.

In fact, he is welcoming the opportunity to “show what Sask baseball is all about.”

The Saskatoon native has burst onto the scene in a big way in major tournaments over the last few months to get his name onto the lineup card at the annual event, which is being held this year in Vancouver.”
