The independent Can Am League’s Ottawa Champions will open their 2019 season tonight at home against the New Jersey Jackals. The Champions, under first-year manager Sébastien Boucher (Gatineau, Que.), are looking to bring another baseball championship to Ottawa after taking home the title in 2016.

Pinto escapes Venezuelan civil unrest to join Champions

Among the players in the independent Can-Am League Ottawa Champions training camp this spring is Eduard Pinto, a Venezuelan outfielder who spent last season with the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Pinto arrived in Ottawa early Friday morning after a number of flight delays getting out of Venezuela. He experienced the civil unrest taking place in Venezuela first hand on his way to Ottawa.
