Betts: Kean faces Kean in keen weekend series at Winthrop

“When Winthrop welcomes Morehead State to Founders Field in Rock Hill, S.C. for a three-game series this weekend, the Kean brothers (Woodstock, Ont.) will be competing for bragging rights.

Older brother Tyler serves as the director of analytics at Winthrop, while the younger Alex is in his junior season at MSU.

“The opportunity to go against my brother this year is unbelievable to me,” Alex said.

“The chances that we both ended up at a Division 1 baseball program and to compete against each other at the same time is spectacular. We've both come a very long way, and I’m nothing but grateful to everyone who has given both Ty and I this incredible opportunity.”

Gallagher: Kent remembers Morgan, Canadian scout who signed him

“Jeff Kent knows what scouts like the late Wayne Morgan go through to find a player, the effort they put in, the miles they travel around the U.S. and Canada.

Kent was speaking to this reporter today upon hearing about the Feb. 12 passing of Morgan, his Blue Jays' signing scout, the first signee of Morgan to be elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

Kent appreciated the fact Morgan (Saskatoon, Sask.) saw something in him and believed in him. With help from fellow scouts John Cole and David Blume, Morgan paved the way for Kent to sign a Jays' contract.

"Wayne was a nice guy, genuine, trustworthy and very knowledgeable. I came from an ignorant background, relying on a lot of people for information. He gave me all of his information about the draft, the process and the Blue Jays. There was no question he was knowledgeable.''

“There were bound to be questions about the immediate impact Carter Beck could have when making the jump from Division II University of Mary to Division I Indiana State University before the 2025 season.

But Beck had the answers.

In his first season with the Sycamores, he finished with a .338 average, 11 home runs, 56 RBIs and a .981 OPS in 56 games.

The new guy no more, the left-handed hitting outfielder has high expectations for 2026.

“I’ve always liked to set my goals high, and this season I aim to be the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year and to be in consideration as an All-American,” Beck said.”

When Stoneman and the Angels met the San Francisco Giants in Game 1 of the 2002 World Series at Edison Field, Stoneman invited Bavasi to the game, providing seats for Bavasi and his family.

Why? Because Bavasi’s prints were all over the 2002 team.
